  • Have systems in place that ensure appropriately skilled and experienced staff only lead the activity

1,2 Lack of supervision and poor group control

  • Meet minimum guidelines for supervision.
  • Ensure those waiting to participate remain in a safe area under supervision.
  • Communication with nominated group supervisors re; safety ratio’s and areas of responsibility.

  • Carry mobile phones.
  • Position 1 safety on bridge and 1 safety on western side of marina.
  • Develop and agree a set of hand and voice signals.
  • Maintain line of sight from pontoon to top of bridge to western side of river.

  • Check all critical safety equipment is in working order before and after use.

3 Unsafe Entry and Exit

  • Identify entry and exit is safe before starting activity.

  • Identify other user of these water ways and set boundaries.
  • When traveling up or down in the river or channel and another vessel approaches from the opposite direction, turn right.

3 Inadequate shelter

  • Ensure waiting areas have shelter available.

6 Moored boats

  • Avoid colliding with moored yachts, boats and launches.

Emergency procedures to manage each identified risk & Emergency gear required

1.0 Death:

  • Freeze scene, move other participants to a safe and secure environment, phone Ambulance (111).
  • Police and contact base coordinator (0275035660) to implement defined procedure.
  • Provide location, details of incident and outline assistance required.
  • Monitor group for any effects.
  • Mobile phone, blanket, map, First Aid Kit.

2.0 Injury:

  • If minor, treat as per standard 1st aid practice.
  • Record details in incident book.
  • If serious, treat as per standard 1st aid practice, phone ambulance (111).
  • Ensure safety of rest of group and contact base coordinator (0275035660).
  • Monitor patient. Record details in incident book.
  • Mobile phone, First Aid Kit, notebook, pencil.

3.0 Environmental illnesses:

  • If minor, treat as per standard 1st aid practice.
  • Record details in incident book.
  • If serious, treat as per standard 1st aid practice, phone ambulance (111).
  • Ensure safety of rest of group and contact base coordinator (0275035660).
  • Monitor patient.
  • Complete OSH Notice of Accident/Serious Harm form
  • Mobile phone, First Aid Kit, survival blanket, rehydration drinks, sleeping bag



4.0 Psychological Harm:

  • Provide counselling to participant.
  • Contact base coordinator and request assistance and advice.
  • Monitor patient.
  • Mobile or fixed line phone.

5.0 Environmental damage:

  • If minor, repair damage as much as possible.
  • Record details in incident book.
  • If significant, report damage to environmental body responsible for area.

  • Isolate any damaged equipment to prevent use.
  • Record loss/damage in Log Book.
  • Advise Manager of details of loss.
